US Civil War submarine. Arrival in 1957 at its new display site of a US Civil War submarine (the Louisiana State Museum submarine). This submarine was once thought to be the Confederate submarine Pioneer (1862), but later evidence disproved this theory. This submarine was discovered in 1878 during dredging of Bayou St John; it is sometimes known as the Bayou St John submarine. Displayed at various locations in its history, the submarine was acquired by the Louisiana State Museum in 1942. Here, it is being moved into the Presbytere Arcade, New Orleans, USA, on 24 April 1957. It was later (1999) moved to the Baton Rouge branch of the State Museum.
