Pilot boat alongside while leaving the harbour, Heimaey, Vestmannaeyjar Islands, southern Iceland. The lava field from of Eldfell, which erupted in 1973, partially blocked the entrance. The eruption lasted nearly 5 months and nearly destroyed the town. Almost all the inhabitants were evacuated on the night of 23 January.
