Hawking's lecture was titled 'The Creation of the Universe'. Hawking is famous for his work on cosmology, quantum gravity and black holes. He is confined to a wheelchair due to the condition amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. He was elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1974, and was made a Companion of Honour in 1989. He was Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge from 1979 to 2009. In 2007, he founded the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology at Cambridge where he was Director of Research.
