Cystic fibrosis patient receiving physiotherapy: massage techniques of postural drainage and percussion are used following nebuliser therapy to loosen the mucus that obstructs the lungs. Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a hereditary disease affecting the exocrine glands that results in the production of thick mucus, which obstructs the bronchi, intestinal glands & pancreas. Severe respiratory infections are a common complication. Advances in molecular genetics have resulted in the identification of the CF gene, which is used to provide diagnostic tests &and appropriate counselling to carriers.
