N. [John North] Willys 10/22/1921. Within balustraded terrace topped with lambrequined valance, a man opening curtains (L); wild plants with fruit, richly woven textile (L) overhanging the balustrade & parrot in foreground; garden landscape with trees & fountain topped with venetian vase in background; hills with buildings in distance (BRD) picture-frame border with acanthus leaves enclosed within narrow bands; scallops in corners The stock sheet relating to this panel is 22791-c, not 22719-b (Soustelle). An illustration in Chevalier shows a larger, similar scene. The design is attributed to Jean-Joseph Dumons, who created 3 scenes for the Grands Rideaux series. In this illustration, the panel combines 2 of the 3 scenes (Campbell/Soustelle). The treatment of the carpet thrown over the balustrade recalls carpets in Beauvais' Emperor of China series. This may be based on a Beauvais tapestry prototype or on compositions by Beauvais designers (Cavallo). The stock sheet states that this panel bears the signature " 'AUBUSSON-MINGOUNAT". It is, however, not visible (Soustelle).
