The other figures give details to a larger scale. This system is also specially applicable to Ship Canals for vessels of any size, onaccoiint of its cheapness, both in the first cost and working expenses ; as well as from therapidity with which vessels can be transferred from one level to another, and the extremelysmall quantity of water taken fi-om the upper level. While ships are being lifted theyeannot be strained in any way as they remain floating during the whole operation just aswhen they are in the canal.
