Twenty four hours, Polychrus marmoratus, so called because it is believed that you will die in 24 hours if one jumps on you. This picture is a close up of its eye surrouded by a \dead\" horny epidermis which is convoluted to form scales. The eyes are located either side of the head so that they command a large field of view but are capable of binocular vision only over a small field. Because binocular vision is necessary for precise estimation of distance; the eyes have become so mobile that they can fixate on prey simultaneously, as in the chameleons. The distance of the prey can therefore be estimated \"stereoscopically\"."
