PITCHER. porated and named in honor of him, ThePitcher Telephone was born in LewisCounty, N. Y., July 2S. 1839, son of Philanderand Mary (Ager) Pitcher. He obtained hiselementary education in the common schools,and when, a youth worked on a farm. In 1861he enlisted in Company I, Fifth New YorkHeavy Artillery, later came to Jo DaviessCounty, 111., and engaged in the mercantilebusiness at a place named Pitcherville in hishonor, afterwards appointed Postmaster dur-ing Lincolns administration. He came to LeeCounty in 1871. being then patentee of the? barley fork, a tool much in use for handlinggrain without binding, but later supersededby the self-binder. Mr. Pitcher sold this im-plement to jobbers over a territory extend-ing from the New England coast to California,and realized a fortune from the same. Laterhe engaged in the implement and coal tradeat Dixon, which he conducted successfullyuntil 1900. In 189(5 he inaugurated the CountyTelephone Company, a system covering
