His grand-mother on the mothers side was brought from Virginia toGeorgia, and his grandfather on the fathers side was a whiteman. Some years after the war, he went to Houston he grew up and was able to work, he spent much of histime in the woods in the cross-tie business. On April 20, 1877,he was married to Miss Nora Finney, of Fort Valley. Sixchildren were born, four daughters and two sons. Threedaughters have grown to womanhood and married. They areElizabeth (Mrs. Williams), Hattie (Mrs. Sutton) and Anne(Mrs. Allen). Both sons and one of the daughters passedaway. After his marriage, young Morris attended the publicschools of Houston county, which is the extent of his school-ing, except a theological course at Atlanta Baptist Seminary,. MAJOR MORRIS. GEORGIA EDITION 551 which lie attended for two terms, in 1889 and 1890. He hasbeen a student all his life, however, and has kept up with theeducational and religious movements of his race. A couple of years after his marriage, he was converted andjoined the Richland Baptist Church, by which he was ordainedto the full work of the ministry four years later and whichhe served as pastor for eleven years. He was successful fromthe beginning. He has built, or greatly improved, the houseof worship at every pastorate where he has remained for anylength of time. At Myrtle, he built both the church and theparsonage. A house of worship was also erected at Mt. Cal-vary, Cordele, where he preached for nineteen years. Later,a new church was organized and called the Morris organization has grown to a membership of 150 andworships in a comfortable house that was built by him. Heserved Sale
