The further weproceed the more numerous are the boulders of this kindof rock, while those of granite at length occur no march south-west and bivouac on the roof of themonastery Tsumtul-pu. All day long, at all the cairnsand all the resting-places, I have heard nothing but anendless murmur of the words Om mani padme hum,and now, as long as I am awake, Om mani padmehum sounds in my ears from all nooks and corners. The temple had no other curiosity but a statue of DukNgavang Gyamtso, 5 feet high, sitting as at a writing-desk, two not very large elephants tusks, and a five-branched chandelier from Lhasa. Our visit, therefore, didnot last long, and we rode down the valley in which theriver gradually increased in size. Here, too, manis andchhortens are erected, and at the end of the valley, whereagain numbers of granite boulders are accumulated, wesee once more Langak-tso and the grand Gurla group. At Tarchen-labrang we reached the termination of the. 273- Tibetan Tent.
