The last that hasbeen heard of Dutch military operations in Achin wasthe slaughter of many hundreds of women and children,and the explanation given was that they were thrust tothe front by the men, who sheltered themselves behindthem, and, in any case, that the women were as desperatefighters as the men. If the last statement be true, it isa very significant testimony to the state of feeling of theAchinese, that their women should join the ranks and die,with their children, in hundreds, under the bullets of anenemy.
