A few of them are shown inPlate E. They have existed, and theirvalves or frustules have been deposited, from time immemorial; and strangethough it may seem, their duty in lifehas been to furnish stone wherewith tobuild our houses. Plate F is a curiosity in its way. shows a diatom called Pleurosigmaformosum, very much magnified, and shows a broken portion of a valve orfrustule, magnified a few million beads on it are the subject of a livelycontroversy amongst the learned in suchmatters.
