Mr. Hackney was also engaged withWilliam Crouse in buying and selling wool, hops and cheese, which partnership lasteduntil about 1882, since which time Mr. Hackney has operated alone. A Democrat inpolitics, he has been for four years president of ttie village of Fort Plain and a memberof the State Loan Commission during Governor Hoffmans administration. He waspostmaster of Fort Plain during President Clevelands administration, and was appomicdby Governor Hill one of the Commissioners of Fisheries. The Hackney Hose Companyof Fort Plain is named in honor of Mr. Hackney. Mr. Hackney married Mary of James Edwards, and they have four children, Catharine E., wife ofEdward Shults of New York; William C, married Anna, daughter of George ,J-^, 9^^.
