As the numberof subscribers increases, succeeding sections may beset up in proximity to each other, and, so long as theexchange is limited to three operators, each can reachthe jacks of all subscribers, and hence can connectwith all. When more than three operators are needed,it is impracticable for each operator to reach all thejacks. There are two solutions: One, the so-called trans-fer system, in which, if a subscriber calls for a partywhose jack is out of the operators reach, she maytransfer the call to some other operator before whom thejack of the desired
