Antigone was the daughter of the Greek king Oedipus and his wife Jocasta. She is shown here with her sister Ismene.

Antigone was the daughter of the Greek king Oedipus and his wife Jocasta. After Oedipus blinded himself and left Thebes, Antigone went with him until his death and then returned to Thebes. King Creon has forbid anyone to bury Polyneices, Antigone's brother who had been killed in battle by his older brother. Antigone disregards the order and buries him, after which Creon shuts her up in an underground vault, where she kills herself. Her sister Ismene (left) who had feared to bury Polyneices cannot bear to be without Antigone and so goes with her to the underground vault. The artist here is Emil Teschendorff and the illustration dates to 1892.
