Praying man inscribed with the name Ginak, prince of the city-state of Edina. About 2700 BC. Limestone. Region of Diyala, Mesopotamia, today's Iraq.

This statuette is the representation of one of the oldest Sumerian rulers with a known name. The prince wears a garment of long wool strands (kaunakes). The geometric forms and the large eyes which were originally incrusted are characteristic of the style of the earliest Sumerian dynasties. This is a part of The birth of writing in Mesopotamia exhibition in the Louvre museum, Lens, France.
