John Wesley (1703-1791) was an English cleric, theologian and evangelist who was a leader of a revival movement within the Church of England known as Methodism. After Wesley's death, the societies he founded became the dominant form of the independent Methodist movement. He continued to be the primary theological influence on Methodists and Methodist-heritage groups the world over; the largest bodies being the United Methodist Church, the Methodist Church of Great Britain and the African Methodist Episcopal Church.
