A dictionary of architecture and building : biographical, historical, and descriptive . by all partiesabout 1598, and who died 1610. The styleknown as UArchitecture Henri Q(;o?ceappearscomplete at the close of the long anarchy of thereligious wars ; it is stronglj difierentiated fromthe pure architecture of the French Renaissance(see Henri Deux ; Renaissance). The style isfirm, spirited, rational, but ilevoid of especialcharm; a style of severe utilitarianism, as faras that was possible in an age when the tradi-tions of decorative art were still fresh. The best-known buildings are those of Paris, as, especially, the liouse fronts on the Place des Vosges andthe Place Dauphine, but also large parts of thePalace of Fontainebleau, such as the Galerie desCerfs and the Cour du Cheval Blanc. The lonogallery of the Louvre on the water front connecting the old Louvre with the ]ialace of thbTuileries was continued under Henri IV., butthe alterations extending even to com])lete re-building have changed the character of thedesign ; moreover, the greater part of this work372 PLATE XV. HENRI DEUX AKClIlTECTrUE A private house in Orl6ans (Loiret), called thehouse of Diane de Ioilievs and known to havebeen built about 1550. The buildins is now usedfor a museum of local antiquities. The conditionsof the early French IJenaissance — the artistsdoubtful of the classical orders and uncertain how far to modify their designs to conform to them, while the details are all of exciuisile delicacy —are well shown in this design. The treatment oftwo jnojectins corners with very different use ofcolumns is very curious.
