Edward Daniel Clarke (1769-1822), English mineralogist and traveller. Clarke was born in Sussex and educated at Tonbridge. He was chapel clerk at Jesus College Cambridge and attained a degree in 1790. He found employment as a private tutor, then as a traveling companion to various wealthy patrons which allowed him to pursue his interest in mineralogy while making several long expeditions across Europe. In 1808 he was appointed professor of mineralogy at Cambridge. Clarke also made some useful discoveries in chemistry, mainly at high temperatures through the use of the gas blow-pipe. In 1817 he was one of the founders of the Cambridge Philosophical Society.
