SAVING CUCUMBER iSEED. I have saved some cucumber seed from vines grown under glass last sum- mer, with the purpose of establishing my own strain this season. But I have been told that if the seed is sown this winter or early spring, the plants will go to vine instead of producing fruits. Is that correct? Your advice will be much appreciated. H. J. P. It is a fact that new seed, just dried, is not the best to plant, but seed that has been dry several months is perfectly safe. Seed that is 2 or 3 years old, how- ever, is better than 1-year-old seed. Al- though the plants are not quite so strong in growth, they fruit a little more heavily. Excellent results are ob- tained, however, from seed saved the previous season and such seed is quite generally used. It should be kept in a warm, dry place, so as to age faster. H. G.
