'The Gauls in Rome', 1890. The Gauls sacked Rome in 390BC, older senators remained in the Forum where they were all killed. Surviving Romans were forced to pay the Gauls gold to depart and to prevent the city from being sacked again, improved their military and strengthened the city wall.
