Everybody loves and admires the beautiful Lily of the Valley, with its handsome, bright green foliage, and sprays of pendant, pure white, bell-shaped flowers. It will en- dure our most severe weather with impunity, and greet us quite early in spring with its modest, charming flowers. It likes a moist, shady place. In all large cities it is esteemed as a winter flower, being forced into bloom by florists who grow flow- ers for sale. It is estimated that in New York City alone over $70,000 are expended annually for the delicate sprays of Lily of the Valley. To have them bloom in winter plant the roots or pips in shallow boxes in November. Let the boxes re- main in a sheltered place out-doors for four weeks, then bring to a warmer temperature, starting at 50° and running up to 65° or 70°. The Lily of the Valley is also unsurpassed for cemetery decora- tion, on account of its hardiness. The pips do not mature growth until in November. Orders cannot be filled till about November 15.
