Knee cartilage reconstruction. Artwork showing the first stages of a method to reconstruct the cartilage in a damaged knee joint. Here, chondrocytes (cartilage cells) are removed from an undamaged area (left side of joint) and placed in a cell culture bottle (right). This will produce a vial of millions of cartilage cells (lower right) to be injected into the damaged area (right side of joint). This procedure is done for conditions such as osteoarthritis. For the second stages of this process, known as autologous chondrocyte implantation, see image C007/2461.
