John Bull originated as a satirical character in 1712 and was created by Dr John Arbuthnot, a friend of Jonathan Swift and Alexander Pope. The character was portrayed as a typical English country dweller. He was usually depicted in a buff-coloured waistcoat and a simple frock coat. Later the waistcoat was often shown with a Union Jack flag design.

Batey became bankrupt in 1881 and the business was bought by Richard James Alabaster a year later. Batey & Co continued until it was sold to Charrington & Co Ltd in 1952. By the 1760s the character was portrayed as a typical English country dweller. He was usually depicted in a buff-coloured waistcoat and a simple frock coat. Later the waistcoat was often shown with a Union Jack flag design. Some areas of the sign were in poor condition with areas of the enamel missing. Some parts have been retouched, especially the damage to John Bull's mouth – vintage Victorian/Edwardian graphics.
