Leena Haque, Senior UX designer, BBC, talking about "Celebrating neurodiversity", on the Humans Stage at New Scientist Live 2019

Have you ever considered how hard it is to concentrate in classrooms or in meetings because the patterns on the walls are alive? What if you couldn’t find the words to properly explain why you do things differently to everyone else? What if you preferred to explain things using pictures instead? Neurodiversity is a relatively new term and focuses on the positive attributes associated with hidden disabilities such as autism spectrum conditions, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, Tourette’s and learning disabilities. In this talk, Sean Gilroy and Leen Haque explain that it's not what you think but how you think that provides new perspectives and more creative solutions and innovations. Hear about the huge amount of untapped potential being overlooked by society in general, become part of a neurodiverse mind and discover how differently wired brains interact with their environment and the world around us. Leena Haque created the BBC’s neurodiversity initiative in 2014 together with Sean Gilroy to improve awareness of hidden conditions such as autism spectrum condition, dyslexia, dyspraxia and ADHD. They have since produced interactive films, VR experiences, workshops, and accessible environment guidelines aimed toward improving employment opportunities for neurodivergent people and they have been invited to speak about their work at conferences internationally, as the neurodiversity agenda grows. Currently part of the BBC’s R&D team, they are now bringing their experience to developing ideas around cognitive design, a new framework for design with neurodiversity at its heart.
