People walk past the closed club Blue Parrot, which was the scene of a shooting that left five people dead during the BPM music festival last January, in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, on July 11, 2017. In early July there was another shooting at a club across the street called La Vaquita aka The Small Cow. Violence in Mexico spiked in 2017 with more than 12,000 homicides in the first six months, leaving many to question the future of this popular touristic area.
