False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the rodlike, gram-negative bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa. An inhabitant of soil & water, the species is also found throughout the hospital environment. These bacteria are pathogenic in humans, but mainly restricted to opportunistic infections in compromised hospital patients. Examples include bacteraemia & endocarditis (in drug abusers), pulmonary infections, ear infections & burns. Pseudomonas possesses structural factors & toxins that enhance its virulence as well as rendering it resistance to most commonly used antibiotics. Magnification: x8800 at 35mm size, x17,600 at 6x7cm size.
