The Old South Church stand-ing on the corner of Washington andMilk streets, which was erected in 1730,is most picturesque. In 177) the BritishDragoons, who cared little for the sacred-ness of its walls, removed the pews and usedthe building as a riding school. The churchis now used as a museum and contains arare collection of relics pertaining to theearly history of New England. Almostopposite it on Milk street is the site of the birthplace of Benjamin Franklin; while onthe opposite corner of Washington streetis the Old Corner Book Store, used assuch since 1712, and which presents asplendid specimen of the dwelling house ofthat time. Kings Chapel at the head of Schoolstreet was built in 1749 and is still used forreligious services. The adjoining buryingground was the first place for intermentsin Boston.
