Illustration depicting the preparation of a sheet of copper for etching. A sheet of polished copper was coated with varnish and then coated with a thin layer of carbon by smoking. The picture was stretched on this surface and the sheet was then placed into a bath of concentrated nitric acid. Dated 19th century
