Making mini tufa towers in a glass beaker at Mono Lake in California. Here, visitors get to mix spring and lake water in a beaker and watch the chemical process make tufa towers form when calcium rich fresh spring water combines with the carbonate rich, salty water of Mono Lake. These towers look like mounds of mud but are rock hard and can grow 30 or 40 feet tall, or higher. The level of Mono Lake has is protected by law so that it will not drop below 6,392 feet above sea level.
