Stanley with Livingstone. Illustration of Anglo-American journalist and explorer Henry Morton Stanley (left, 1841-1904) on the Zambezi in the period 1871-2 with British missionary and explorer David Livingstone (right, 1813-1873). Stanley went to Africa to meet Livingstone, finding him at Lake Tanganyika on 10 November 1871. Livingstone, who had been feared dead, was lauded as a hero in Victorian Britain. Stanley travelled with him until 18 February 1872 and then left, having failed to persuade him to return home. Livingstone died in Africa the following year. Artwork from 'The Life and Explorations of Dr Livingstone', first published in around 1870.
