A funny souvenir from Amsterdam Holland: a bird house modeled after a traditional house from the Zaanstreek or Zaan Region.
Birdhouses, nesting boxes in the form of traditional Dutch houses. These particular birdhouse seem to be meant for Coal or Blue Tits. While the above is purely fictional, the green one below is only slightly different from actual traditional houses in the Zaanstreek. The region where also the Zaanse Schans is situated: the region's cultural conservation area. Color and overall proportions are quite accurate. Just the window that serves as the bird's entrance is a bit too wide. The comical figures that depict a fisher and his wife are about 15 miles, 25 km, out of place: they hail from Volendam on the Zuyderzee the current IJsselmeer. The Zaanstreek, the borders of the Zaan River, was one of the first industrial areas in Europe, famous for shipbuilding and industrial production not fishing or farming.
