Distinguished spectators at the launch of Apollo 11. US Vice-President Spiro Agnew (right) and former US President Lyndon watch as the Saturn V rocket carrying Apollo 11 to the Moon lifts off from the Kennedy Space Center, Florida. Apollo 11 was launched on 16 July 1969, with the first manned Moon landing, in the Sea of Tranquility, on 20 July 1969. The Lunar Module remained on the Moon for 21 hours, astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin 'Buzz' Aldrin becoming the first and second person to step on the Moon. The Apollo 11 capsule, also carrying astronaut Michael Collins, splashed down on 24 July 1969
