Chironomus gnat pupa. The chironomids or non-biting midges are a type of fly. They are sometimes known as bloodworms due to the red colour of some of their larvae. The larvae are aquatic, with the adult midges found near bodies of water. Here, the pupa is swimming to the surface. Chironomid larvae reach lengths of about 1 centimetre.
