The topography of the Somme plain (Fig. 46) was in manyrespects especially favorable to such an enterprise. The enemysfront was protected by no continuous natural barrier of formid-able proportions. The Ancre made such an acute angle with theSomme that it was impossible for the Germans between thetwo rivers to utilize both streams to their junction withoutcreating a narrow and vulnerable salient in their line.
