This image may not be used to state or imply NOAA endorsement of any company or product Hurricane Charley passing over Cuba, on 12th August 2004. The US state of Florida is at top centre, Mexico is at bottom left and islands of the Caribbean are at centre right. Hurricanes are enormous rotating storm systems in which winds can reach over 240 kilometres per hour. They can cause immense damage if they hit built-up areas, but lose energy quickly over land. At the time this image was taken Charley was classified as a type 2 hurricane. Image taken by the NOAA-12 weather satellite.
