Portrait of Nurse Nelly, Jan Toorop, 1894 drawing Petronella Alida Goudkade (1870-1956), "Sister Nelly", obtained her diploma at the Buitengasthuis in Amsterdam in 1892. Then she left for The Hague, where she worked as a district nurse for the Red Cross. In 1894 she married the writer Ary Prins. Presumably Toorop made this portrait of her shortly before their marriage. Behind her a vague whimsical pattern of birds.
