The early 1900s caption reads: "Sigurd eapt upon hus back and named him Greyfell." In Norse mythology, Grani is the hero Sigurd’s powerful and fearless horse, descended from the chief god Odin’s own steed, Sleipnir, the fastest horse in the world. In the Scandinavian epic the ‘Volsunga Saga’, Grani is called Greyfell.
