Ruins of the Peristyle House at Metropolis ancient site in Izmir province of Turkey. The large square-planned yard in the middle was covered with marble plates and lines with four rows of pillars on each side. Metropolis was founded during the Early Bronze Age, about 5,000 years ago. During the Hellenistic period, the city was fortified with impressive walls, while during the Roman period trade was among the main sources of income in the city that was located on the road between Ephesus and Smyrna.
