This is the Knightwood Oak the biggest and possibly the oldest oak in the New Forest It is possibly between 400 and 500 years old The Knightwood Oak is a pollard when it was young someone cut its head off This encouraged new growth which would have been harvested for firewood every few decades Pollarding oaks was made illegal in the New Forest in 1698 because it spoilt the shape of trees for shipbuilding
