DIEGO (Feb. 28, 2019) Chief Warrant Officer Joseph Garr, assigned to the amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8), pipes a Sailor ashore on the pier. Piping ashore is a ceremonial tradition performed for Sailors leaving a command. Makin Island, home-ported in San Diego, is conducting a depot-level maintenance availability.
