The numberof trees suitable for street use in any city is small, and thosewhich can be used in Manhattan with any reasonable expec-tation of success is still smaller. Under the most favorableconditions which exist in ^ew York, such as on parkways oron streets and avenues having broad parkings, there is a fairrange of choice; but in the main, the most satisfactory re-sults will be obtained by restricting our list of trees to sixor seven species.
