In the battle, the Army of the Potomac, after some of the severest fighting ever recorded in history, achieved the greatest victory of the war. In the words of their commander General Meade, 'They fought a desperate foe for eight days and nights almost without intermission, compelling him to abandon his fortifications on the Rapidan, and other entrenched positions, with a loss of 18 guns, 22 colors and 8000 prisoners, including 2 General Officers.' In this great fight, General Hancock made his famous charge, capturing the Rebel General E. Johnson and his whole division, with a party of Early's." The Battle of Spotsylvania Court House was the second major battle in Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant's 1864 Overland Campaign.
