Fornearly eighteen years he was secretary of the Phila-delphia Conference of Baptist Ministers ; for five yearssecretary of the American Baptist Historical Society ;and for long terms served as a member of the board ofmanagers of four of the leading denominational soci-eties ; and this, in addition to his duties as chaplain ofGeorge G. Ritzius (Twenty-fifth Infantry) wasborn in Prussia on January 3, 1839. Early in the war fthe Rebellion he entered the volunteer service as private ofCompany A, Fifth New York State Militia, May 1, 1861,and was honorably discharged, after serving in the defences< if Washington, August 7, 1861. He re-entered the vol-unteer service as first sergeant of Company G, Fifty-second New York Infantry, September 17, [86l,and wasdischarged June 30, 1862, in order to accept the appoint-ment of second lieutenant in the same regiment, in whichhe was promoted first lieutenant August 23, 1862, andcaptain September 16, 1863. lie was honorably mustered(nit August 2, 1864, but was appointed major of the Fifty-second New York Infantry December 8, 1864, and was promoted lieutenant-colonel of the same regiment in May,1S65, but was not mustered as such, owing to the regi-ment being re
