Dutch Trader Warns Ieyasu
Ieyasu (1542-1616) founded the Tokugawa shogunate in Japan. His victory over rivals in the battle of Sekigahara (1601) made him successor to Hideyoshi as supreme leader of Japan. He encouraged foreign trade, but moved toward an isolationist policy after Spanish and Portuguese missionaries began arriving. The Dutch kept on good terms with Ieyasu, and the Dutch East India Trade Company prospered. In this engraving, dating to around 1901, a Dutch trader warms Ieyasu against the Spanish and Portuguese.
