The small portion of skull preserved in the type does not admit of many comparisons, but a distinctive feature is shown in the extreme forward position of the infraorbital foramen, which is placed directly above the space between p^ and ^ The masseter ridge extends but little farther forward than in A^ whitneyi. The lower jaw is much longer and more slender than in N. whitneyi, or any other known Miocene species of horse. The muzzle portion is proportionally longer than the average of a dozen specimens of Equus cabal- lus examined. The lower border of the ramus is bowed as in .Y. whitneyi and N.
