The spotselected was on the northwest corner ofLight street and Wine alley. The buildingwas commenced in August, 1785, being 46feet front by 70 feet deep. On May 21,1786, the church was dedicated by BishopAsbury. This structure was destroyed byfire December 4, 1 796. At the same timeCokesbury College, which stood on thesouthwest corner of Light street and \\inealley, was FOIIT McHENRY. OF STAR BASNEIt FAME. LANDMARKS OF METHODISM. 17 Cokesbury College was the Hist Meth-odist institution of learning founded inAmerica. It was originally erected atAbingdon, Harford county, Md., and wasopened by Bishop Asbury December 10,1787. The building and necessar\ apparatuscost upward of ;£. 10,000. The success ofthe college was highly satisfactory. Decem-ber 4, 1795, the college was destroyed byfire. The Methodists of Baltimore ralliedto the relief of the church, and to repairthis calamity a large and elegant assemblyroom was purchased adjoining Light StreetChurch, and the college year after the first fire, to the veryday, the college was again destroyed withthe Light Street Church, and was neverrebuilt. The site of the college building wasselected for the place of the reconstructedLight Street Church, that is, at the south-west corner of Light street and Wine alley,whereas the church had formerly stood onthe
