Pollarded trees line both riverbanks and grasses can be seen growing up from the still surface of the water. The name of the photographer, " EMERSON", has been scratched into the lower left corner of the image. (Recto, adjacent interleaving) center, printed in black ink: "PLATE VII. A BACKWATER ON THE LEA."
