Congo Buffalo head horns and body

full head and horns of a congo buffalo looking at the camera contrasting its head with its large body frame. Taken at Marwell Zoo Hampshire England 09 November 2005. The Congo buffalo is reddish brown with wide droopy ears. They grow up to metres tall and 320 Kg. They live in the lowland tropical rainforests of Africa and are at relatively low level of risk of extinction but illegal hunting and lost habitat is reducing their numbers. They are found in small herds of typically 8 to 20. Their horns are swept back so they avoid getting entangled in the bush of the rainforest where they live. They eat grass and some low level leaves of trees feeding at night or very early and late using their well adapted long tongue. They can run at up to 35 miles and hour about 55 Kmh. Marwell Zoo feed them on oats, hay, flaked maize and special custom nuts, grass and vegetation.
