Orchid flowers (Dactylorhiza iberica). Close-up of the cluster of flowers that is produced by this orchid. The spotted petal of each flower is called the lip. This is a specialised petal to attract pollinators and provide them with a landing platform. The Dactylorhiza orchids are terrestrial orchids (ones that grow in the soil), found in bogs and meadows in the temperate regions of Europe, Asia and the Middle East. There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
